The Ring Incident

I have become convinced that the fall of Western civilization can be directly traced to the customer service department of a certain large national electronics retailer.

For legal reasons, I won’t identify it by name.

Let’s just say it rhymes with “Breast Guy.”

The evidence is overwhelming.

Exhibit A: Me.

Specifically, my attempt to buy an Oura Ring for my husband.

Surprise.

I bought you an Oura Ring.

Getting it home nearly killed me.

I was simply trying to buy a gift.

In retrospect, that endeavor was wildly optimistic.

It took me twenty minutes to find someone.

That’s inaccurate.

It took me twenty minutes to find someone who could find someone who could find someone who might be able to help me.

A search effort was eventually launched that appeared to be modeled after the hunt for Amelia Earhart.

After several consultations, radio transmissions, and what I can only assume was a review of satellite imagery, they identified the correct employee, who approached me with the enthusiasm of someone being asked to help an elderly relative reset a printer.

By now, we were about fifteen minutes from closing time.

The witching hour.

A time when every employee is staring at the clock and every customer is developing a complicated question.

The ring display looked promising.

The employee showed me finishes, colors, and options.

I started getting excited.

Then he informed me they didn’t actually have any rings.

None.

He seemed quite certain of this.

Nevertheless, we proceeded directly into a discussion of ring sizes in case a box containing one was eventually located in the back room.

Apparently we had entered the manifesting phase of the transaction.

For that, I had come prepared.

I had brought my husband’s actual wedding ring.

You know.

The ring that has spent the last thirty years attached to my husband’s actual finger.

The employee examined it and informed me it was not a reliable indicator of size.

Thirty years of continuous field research was considered insufficient data.

Instead, he suggested a size that could double as a napkin ring.

I accepted this recommendation because it was ten minutes before closing and my critical thinking skills had begun shutting down.

I was operating under the same psychological principles used in hostage negotiations.
I would have agreed to almost anything.

“Do you have a sizing kit?” I asked.

They did.

For ten dollars.

The process, as explained, was simple in the way only something deeply complicated can be:

I would buy a gift card, use it to buy the sizing kit, return the kit, receive credit, and apply that credit toward the ring, which I would have already purchased by then.

A closed loop of retail origami.

At this point I stopped asking follow-up questions out of self-preservation.

I bought the ring. I bought the sizing kit. I bought the emotional damage that came bundled with both.

Then I remembered something.
The ring came with just a two-week return window.

Normally this wouldn’t matter.

But I was buying a gift, and I needed enough time for my husband to decide whether it was life-changing technology or an expensive step counter.

So I called customer service.

This, as it turns out, was where the real adventure began.

The representative was cheerful.
That should have been a warning.

I explained the situation.
He explained the solution.

The membership that would extend the return window couldn’t be applied to the ring I had already purchased.

My best option, he said, was to return to the store, find a manager, explain everything, and be very nice.

He emphasized “very nice” enough that I began to suspect my official appeals process might have to include baked goods.

Possibly banana bread. With chocolate chips.

If that failed, I would need to return the ring, buy the membership, and then repurchase the ring.

So that I could eventually return it again.

There was a pause long enough to qualify as emotional weather.

Then I said:

“Let me see if I understand this correctly.”

I repeated it back slowly, like I was translating quantum physics for a golden retriever.

He confirmed I understood perfectly.

Which somehow made it worse.

What struck me wasn’t the ring.

It was that I had spent part of my finite existence navigating overcomplicated gift cards, irrelevant sizing kits, memberships, and permissions structures just to buy something that should have been a simple transaction.

Somehow half an afternoon disappeared into procedural fog.

It wasn’t the money.

It was the life.

And unlike the ring, that isn’t returnable.
